Providing teenagers with the knowledge and skills to accept responsibility for their own personal financial well-being is a process that enjoys almost universal acceptance and verbal support of parents, educators and economists throughout the United States.

Adolescence is a time when young people are particularly vulnerable to the enticement of immediate gratification and at the same time are beginning to think about their first part time jobs and other ways to finance their spending.

In May, 2002, the Virginia Council for the Financial Education of Youth was established as a non-profit corporation to implement a program in Personal Finance education for schools and community service organizations in the Richmond metropolitan area. Our purpose is to teach young people the skills necessary to accept personal responsibility for their own financial well-being. We use the curriculum developed and tested by the National Endowment for Financial Education. Our Council enjoys the endorsement of the Financial Planners Association of Central Virginia and has been granted 50l(c) (3) status by the Internal Revenue Service to operate as a public charity.

Since May, the Council has provided over 6,000 student/hours of Personal Finance education to young people, established a presence in four schools and has developed working relationships with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Richmond and the North Richmond YMCA.

This is our mission:

Above all else, we are committed to provide high school students with an educational foundation that will enable them to accept direct responsibility for their own financial well-being. In pursuit of our mission, we believe that the following value statements are true and essential:

  • Knowledge is the foundation of any human endeavor.
  • The discipline of saving is essential to the accumulation of personal wealth.
  • Establishing financial goals and objectives provides direction for accomplishment.
  • Personal financial achievement fosters a commitment to preserve and shepherd
wealth entrusted to us by others.
